NO MAKEUP-MAKEUP LOOK…
My no makeup makeup look – basically my everyday look unless I have plans other than the usual day that can consist of, emailing nonstop, conference calls, running errands, gym and/or barre class, blogging, and everything else in between. Like I said, I don’t need to be done up for any of these things, but I’m not the type to leave the house in sweats, looking less than somewhat put together, ever. Unless I happen to have the flu and am deliriously sick. My usual outfit to match this no makeup-makeup look is Lululemon head to toe and some Giuseppe Zanotti kicks, but recently due to this arctic snowy weather, it’s been snow boots or the dreaded, but warm, Uggs (on sale now). This post is basically the general base of all my makeup looks. From here it really depends on how much I care what I look like, what look I’m going for, and more importantly, how much more time I have before Mike’s yelling at me that we’re late to be somewhere (i.e. pictured above, running late around LA last week, oops!). Here I actually got dressed and didn’t throw on the usual lululemon gear, so I needed some more time!
Back to the makeup. Like I’ve said before, I have dry skin, so these products are what I’ve found to work best for me. However, I will say these products are all highly endorsed by great makeup artists I’ve worked with in LA & NYC (looking for anyone? comment or send me a message and I’ll point you in the right direction!). Don’t be scared of oil based or oil ingredients in your makeup/skincare products, if you are, go read IS BEING OILY SO BAD? Ok, no we can resume.
After my skincare regimen, like I’ve mentioned in other posts, I use a lot of different products and switch it up pretty often, but this month or so it’s consistently been the following:
shocking side note: lately I’ve been skipping the moisturizer step, usually a big NO-NO but listen to why. The only reason I’ve been able to get away with this is because of the high quality serum I do use in combination with the super moisturizing primer I won’t go a day without. If you can only splurge on one (serum or moisturizer), make it the serum, I highly believe in them over moisturizers alone (they are a higher concentration of a moisturizer so it’s basically doubling up). I’ve been lectured about this many a time by dermatologists and aestheticians all over the place. Splurge for the serum ladies!
moisturizer: (when I do use this, I always apply after the serum has fully absorbed, you want to get your money’s worth on these products!): Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion
primer: Hourglass Primer Serum!!! One of my personal beauty rules, always use a primer. As much as I love makeup, I definitely do not love the massive clogging of pores it causes and having to rewash my face over and over even after the use of a makeup wipe and sometimes following up with an exfoliating mask, just to get that extra clean feeling. Not implying that you need to pile on the makeup everyday, but if you use a quality primer you will see how effortless it is to remove your makeup. It will also make your look last throughout the day longer, so very few touchups, more like none at all. Unless you’re on a set with hot lamps surrounding every inch of you or something! Don’t ask me the details behind how primers work, I’m not a scientist, just a lover of them! Not all primers do the trick though, most of them start off pretty well but don’t last throughout the day or even worse, they begin to pill on your face if combined with certain moisturizers/serums and foundations etc. (yuck!). If you want a primer recap/comparison like the Cleansing Oil post I did, stay tuned! I fully endorse the use of primers and feel it is my duty to educate the women, and men out there, who need to be up to date with the best primers on the market! Never put a foundation on your bare skin, just don’t do it, it’s not worth it!
beauty blender: if you don’t have these yet, get some asap! They are amazing and the best way to apply, blend and contour your makeup. I also added some great makeup brushes in the shop section below incase you prefer brushes. I prefer the use of beauty blenders for the face.
Once the primer is slicked on (this one does look a little greasy but that is how it hydrates!) use a damp * (make sure to read the directions for how to properly use a beauty blender) and I apply my go-to #1 Foundation: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, lately I’ve been wearing #5.5, but I have a few different shades ready incase we go away or I get a spray tan (yay)!
Foundation side note: always make sure you have more than one shade, you’d be surprised how much your skin can tan or fade in just a day or two. Don’t rely on your go to color for life, things change, and most especially your skin!
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat: this is another must have, wait this entire list is a must have! Ok, so I use this on the bridge of my nose, under my eyes (in an upside down triangle shape, a bit above above my eyebrows/center of eyebrows and center of forehead, a bit on center of my chin, a dab in my cupid’s bow to plump up lips and anyplace else that I need a little lightening – if I have a dark spot from a past breakout etc. While I let this concealer/highlighter/all in one color corrector bake in, I move onto my eyebrows…that means leave it be, looking like the lion king and all.
It’s all about the eyebrows these days right? Although I have been blessed with not having to ever wax them, I tweeze strays myself – I do like filling them in to finish out the overall cohesive symmetrical makeup look – it really makes all the difference when done properly.
Of course, I use nothing but the best, Anastasia brow wiz in taupe/blonde. All of her brow products are excellent, sometimes I use her powder and wax palette, but for day to day the brow wiz is just a quicker application for me. Don’t let the name of the color fool you, speaking to all my dirty-blondes or super blondes out there! Make sure you apply the pencil with a super light hand, you can always add more as you go, but I myself have used too much in the past and you do not want that look, believe me! It is much better, when using a lighter touch.
Once my brows are on fleek – I then take my contour brush or another beauty blender and blend in my touche éclat areas. I prefer the beauty blender but a quality brush will work just as fine for this.
bronzer: Chanel Soleil Tan Bronzer just to give some dimension I throw on just under my cheekbones, sides of my nose & top of forehead with a flat contour brush, then blend blend blend. For the regular day I use a light bronzer otherwise I use makeup pro’s Kryolan contour cream set, you’d have to purchase this at a professional makeup store as they’re usually only used on set (how I found them!) but they are perfect for a serious contour! You can purchase them at Naimie’s Beauty Center in LA, or just click Naimie’s for their online shop! You’re welcome!
mascara: ALWAYS apply mascara, you don’t need the liner for day looks, or even the shadow if you’re going for a natural look. First I curl with Shu Uemura eyelash curler (the absolute best) and apply Benefit They’re Real mascara, a recent new addition of mine. I usually am a YSL Faux Cils addict, but this works great and saves me money on day to day looks.
Final touch: Ben Nye Banana powder (also available at Naimie’s), or any setting powder you prefer. Apply just opposite of where the bronzer was applied, i.e. jawbone, bridge of nose, center of forehead and under eyes to brighten and set your concealer if you have dark circles. A little goes a long way, and make sure you use a BEAUTY BLENDER for this, nothing else makes it work as well, they go hand in hand. And use a super light hand in a bouncing motion, as always with the beauty blender.
If you can’t go without a lip color, add a natural cream-sheen lipstick or gloss. I love Mac‘s mineralize natural luxe texture and they have a great selection of neutral colors, or whatever you prefer! In this harsh winter weather I just throw on my well-trusted Aquaphor to prevent chapped lips and keep them moisturized and shiny all day!
As always, you can shop the items below. I also added in a few other options that I swap in and out of my routine – each image provides a link directly where you can read more about each product and purchase if interested!
